Have no fear, the ZenFone 6 flip camera is freaking tough

When ASUS first unveiled their innovative flip camera design, a lot of people questioned its durability. Gosh, having gears and moving parts on a mobile phone? Weak. Bound to fail. It must be fragile. Wrong! There are a few recent videos and demonstrations showing the true toughness of the ZenFone 6 flip camera and it’s safe to say you don’t have a whole lot to worry about. The initial ZenFone 6 flip camera naysayers are now gushing at the durability of the flip camera. Go figure.

If you want to make an impact these days, you need exposure especially on places like YouTube. ASUS can thank JerryRigEverything who is a renowned, well respected and relevant YouTuber who puts various devices through their paces and teardowns. He’s the ultimate torture test guy and can do to phones what none of us would dare do. He will scratch, bend, burn, and push a device to the limit, all for our viewing pleasure. Judging by his gleeful commentary while torturing devices, he quite enjoys his job.

At the time of writing this article, almost 1.3 million people have watched JerryRigEverything’s ZenFone 6 durability test. Clearly people are quite curious about this phone’s durability. JerryRigEverything doesn’t hold back and completes his full-on durability testing and the ZenFone 6 passes with flying colors. The main focus is of course the flip camera and here are a few quotes from JerryRigEverything’s flip camera durability test:

“The camera unit really does feel much stronger than I thought it would”

“There’s definitely a very strong hinge of some sort inside the phone”

“I’m impressed. This thing is solid and still moving like a flipping champion.”

During the ASUS India launch event they also focused in on the flip camera durability and toughness. In one launch event video, ASUS has someone holding the phone by the camera module only. They wiggle it excessively and they even start swinging it around like a windmill. As you might expect, the flip camera module continued to operate perfectly regardless of the excessive handling.

ASUS engineers put a lot of work into the flip camera design. They tried various materials and found that liquid metal (new type of alloy) was the best solution. It is 80-percent the weight of stainless steel and is 4-times tougher. ASUS also ran an endurance test in their lab where the camera module was opened and closed continuously. ASUS claims the flip camera is good for up to 100,000 flips, which amounts to 28 selfies every day for 5 years.

Beyond just the materials and testing ASUS wanted to reduce every risk they could. Thus, they implemented an automatic detection system so that when the phone suddenly drops, the flip camera module will retract super fast. Technically ASUS calls this a gravitational sensor. We’ve included a video of that built-in drop defense system. Reviewers have tested this safeguard and have confirmed that indeed it works.

If you want to enjoy innovation, most times you need to trust the product was well put together. Brilliant engineers and quality materials should provide peace of mind, but nothing beats real life durability tests. Lab tests can only tell us so much. The recent real-life tests and demonstrations should provide even the most cynical consumers with peace of mind about the ZenFone 6 flip camera. Are you convinced or do you continue to be skeptical of the flip module durability? Let up know in the comment section below!

ASUS can thank ZenFone 6 for their smartphone business recovery

There has been some doom and gloom surrounding ASUS and their mobile phone business in the recent past. We were not immune to some of that pessimism with the announcement of cutbacks and fewer ZenFone models being launched. The bleak future seems rather short lived, as it appears now that ASUS executives are optimistic about their smartphone business and expect a gradual recovery into profitability. How is this quick turnaround possible? All the credit goes to the ZenFone 6 and the team that put it all together.

ASUS chairman Jonney Shih spoke with Digitimes and shared his thoughts on how their mobile phone business is progressing. Shih credits the strong demand for the ZenFone 6 and the upcoming launch of the ROG Phone 2 in helping the mobile phone business recover. Shih also noted that the company will continue to invest in smartphone development, targeting power users and gamers. This is promising news for us since we need new phones to write about!

The second-generation ROG Phone 2 is set for a third quarter release date which should bolster the mobile phone business for ASUS. It’s not clear at this point if the company has another trick up its sleeve like they did with the ZenFone 6 flip camera innovation. Nobody saw a flip camera coming so it’s best not to limit expectations when it comes to the new ROG Phone. The category of gaming phones is a new and it’s unproven to a large extent. Is there a big market for game “centric” smartphones? ASUS says yes, but time will tell.

Clearly the ZenFone 6 is the hero product that ASUS was so deperately seeking. They have the demand, but they now need to deliver the product to markets in a timely manner or risk losing much of the goodwill that consumers have expressed. It does seem like a tough crowd who want the phone in their hands or they will move on.

To facilitate the turnaround they need units available to be sold. Making matters more precarious is the reality that smaller mobile phone players like ASUS face additional challenges to quickly ramp up production. The question remains how well ASUS can meet consumer demand. While trying to catch up, communicating release dates and availability should help to reduce any growing frustration and impatience.

Not that long ago there were rumors that ZenFone brand would be no more. ASUS quickly squashed those rumors, but at the same time significant cuts to their mobile phone business took place and things were being dialed back. There was uncertainty for sure and little reason for optimism. Then the ZenFone 6 happened. If ASUS sees profound growth in their mobile phone business over the next year, they should look no further than the team who developed the ZenFone 6 for the good fortune and turnaround.

Full Details – India ASUS 6z (ZenFone 6)

India is an important market to ASUS and judging by the group of top executives on-hand for the ZenFone 6 (known as 6z in India due to trademark issue) launch event, this product is very important to the company. India has been price sensitive and with the praise that the 6z has received, it’s unclear how the India consumers will respond. Everyone needs to keep in mind that this isn’t a budget phone and it’s packing the Snapdragon 855 processor.

Try not to be confused about the phone’s naming. India gets the ZenFone 6 but it is called ASUS 6z. If ASUS is able to win their court dispute over the using of “Zen” in their products, we don’t know if that means a switch back or if this will forever be the 6z. Perhaps it will be branded the ZenFone 6z if they win the court case.

India ZenFone 6 (ASUS 6z) Prices:

  • 6GB/64GB – ₹31,999
  • 6GB/128GB – ₹34,999
  • 8GB/256GB – ₹39,999

Available to buy on Flipkart. You can buy starting June 26th at 12pm. If India is like every market so far, these early units will sell out! Act fast or you will end up waiting for restocking which may take substantial time. ASUS has to keep enough inventory for other launch countries first, then restocking will occur.

Currently there is only Midnight Black showing up on Flipkart. ASUS has official said that the Twilight Silver manufacturing process takes more time which is why it’s not being listed at launch in India. Most likely India will eventually get Twilight Silver but we need to confirm this.

ASUS announced during the launch event that there are a few India specific customizations available. These include:

  • Call recording – added because Android P doesn’t allow
  • Twin apps – allows user to use different accounts in apps like Facebook
  • Outdoor Mode – specific to ambient noise in India
  • Mobile manager – allows users to fully control behaviors of 3rd party apps
  • FM Radio
  • Applock via Face and Fingerprint – unlock an app with a fingerprint or face

The ZenFone 6 supports 4G VoLTE network. Both SIMs support 4G VoLTE simultaneously. The Jio SIM will work with the ASUS 6z.

OptiFlex promises fastest app launches ever in the ZenFone 6

ASUS has made a concerted effort to streamline and reduce the ZenUI to an almost stock Android experience. This move has been universally applauded by consumers, observers and reviewers and the ZenFone 6 has received many accolades as a result. Although a lot of bulk was removed, not everything was scrapped. OptiFlex, a resource-management engine, survived the ZenUI cuts and brings improved performance and speed to the ZenFone 6.

With this latest iteration of OptiFlex and with Android Pie’s “Adaptive Battery”, you basically get the best of both worlds. Increased speeds to your most used apps via OptiFlex and less resources to infrequently used apps thanks to Google’s Adaptive Battery. Two different AI learning-based features that should help reduce battery usage and improve performance where and when you need it most.

You may not be familiar with OptiFlex, so let’s break it down for you. You control OptiFlex from your settings menus under “AI Features”. Follow this path: Settings > Advanced > OptiFlex.

OptiFlex manages Android’s system processes more intelligently to make efficient use of memory. It keeps track of your behaviour and ensures that the most frequently used apps get the most resources. Said another way, OptiFlex keeps your frequently-used apps in memory for as long as possible to help them load faster. OptiFlex effectively distributes power to your most-used apps and over time through AI, it can predict what apps you’ll use next. ASUS also claims that OptiFlex saves power on standby.

There are many toggle on/off selections within OptiFlex that give you complete control. You can choose to speed up apps including: Chrome, Facebook, Gmail, YouTube, Google, among others. You can literally make the ZenFone 6 faster for the things you use most often. You can manually choose to speed up certain apps or you can allow OptiFlex to “Auto-select based on app usage”. Experiment and see what works best for you.

To be clear, ASUS makes a lot of claims about OptiFlex. Future reviews and comparisons will be needed to back up the claims and validate the promises made. Sometimes features can sound somewhat gimmicky but ASUS has clearly put some effort into optimizing OptiFlex in ZenUI 6. With the 6GB, 8GB or even 12GB RAM options on the ZenFone 6 you will have plenty of memory to maximize the benefits that it can bring. With most of your apps remaining in memory it makes sense that they will load more quickly. Let us know what you think of OptiFlex on your ZenFone 6 in the comments below!

It’s ASUS 6z, not ZenFone 6 for India (rebrand only)

Nothing like a bit of tech drama. ASUS is moving ahead in spite of the “Zen” court challenges and is pushing ahead with their planned June 19th release date for the ZenFone 6 in India. We mean to say the “ASUS 6Z” release date in India is moving forward as planned. The company appears to be taking the legal situation seriously and is making every effort to say clear of “Zen”, at least for now.

It’s going to be interesting to see how ASUS navigates around “Zen” in their launch presentation tomorrow in India. ZenUI becomes what exactly? It would seem that some software tweaks are in order but are those already in place? The presenters are going to be challenged not to slip up and call the ASUS 6z the ZenFone 6.

ASUS will have to wait until July for their appeal of the India high courts decision. Losing that appeal will create a massive task for ASUS as the company is so embedded with the word “Zen” and have established so many products and marketing materials in India using those marks for years. It’s almost absurd to think of having to redo everything in the ZenFone, ZenBook and ZenPad product line-ups after operating in India over such a long period of time.

With the launch of the ASUS 6z tomorrow in India, the official prices will be unveiled. As with previous years, ASUS is partnering with Flipkart who will be offering pre orders and support for the new phone. If you didn’t like the prices of the ZenFone 5z last year then you will likely be disappointed this year as ASUS has stated the prices of the ZenFone 6 have not increased, but stayed the same. More details coming shortly from the India ASUS 6z launch event tomorrow at 12:30 India time.
